- TOLKIEN, JOHN RONALD REUEL [1892-1973].  Born in
- Bloemfontein, South Africa, Tolkien was a scholar by
- profession.  He attended King Edward's School, St. Phillip's
- Grammar School and Oxford University; he worked on the staff
- of the New English Dictionary and held professorships at
- Leeds and Oxford.  His principal focus was the study of
- languages.  This focus carried over into his literary work:
- in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he devised 15 entire
- languages for his characters.
