- HERBERT, FRANK PATRICK [1920-1986].  Born in Tacoma,
- Washington, USA, Frank Herbert spent most of his life in
- California, Hawaii and in Washington state.  A professional
- journalist, an ecologist, a conservationist and then a
- science fiction writer, he is best known as the author of the
- Dune books, but he wrote numerous works of science fiction,
- among them several set in his Whipping Star universe, which
- featured an imaginative Bureau of Sabotage, created to stem
- the problem of a democratic government which functioned too
- efficiently.
