If it is possible atleast a 1mbit connection
Run freeBSD , some people have diffrent opinions
UnrealIRCD is the most populare IRCD it is Easy to use
and get yourself a domain

first, you need to register a domain. these are as cheap as $8 from some places, but range to 15, 20. a good place to start would be www.godaddy.com. these require credit cards, though. You'll then need to get a domain host, free ones - www.mydomain.com - www.zoneedit.com, and set up all your dns.
a shell account might be a plan, another thing that requires credit cards, and sometimes paypal. - www.paypal.com - use google and search for "Shell Accounts" - a good place to start would be www.g4-hosting.net, www.wcshells.com to name a couple.
then you have to decide on what ircd version you wish to use, codemastr's unreal ircd? www.unrealircd.org, not my favourite of ircds, but it's good for new people to admining. you can have ircu, like undernet has - http://coder-com.undernet.org/, or if you're a dalnet person, you can have bahamut, http://bahamut.dal.net/. there are various other ircds out there, Ultimate - http://www.shadow-realm.org/, Hybrid, Viagra, Dancer, ircd, irco, ...lots of different ones, search google for "Unix IRCd", it'll come up with something.
then you'll need to read all the document's on your ircd, and configure it yourself, or get a friend to help you. on the two shell providers i mentioned earlier, you can get technical support, and people who will help you step by step through each process if you don't feel confident enough to do it on your own.
All this being said, if you want to go at it alone on Windows, you can download what is called a wircd (ircd for windows). codemastr's unrealircd can be run on any windows platform, i think? - www.unrealircd.org, and if you search google for "Windows IRcds", you'll come up with something. You'll still need to register a domain, get a dns host, and you'll still need to read through the documents.
some more good websites on these subjects;
www.irchelp.org
www.anope.org - unreal, bahamut etc services
www.srvx.com - ircu services
www.gnuworld.net - ircu services (although these are the largest services made to my knowledge, take up over 1gb on Linux to set up and operate fully, once you've got everything installed to install them, of course.)
www.godaddy.com - cheap registrar
www.g4-hosting.net - cheap, reliable shell accounts
www.wcshells.com - cheap, reliable shell accounts
www.zoneedit.com - free dns hosting
If there's anything else I can help you with, you can locate me on IRC - irc.gh0st4u.net and I'll be in #routing as marc. |

My advice,
Read. A lot. To know how to run an IRC network takes time and patience, it helps to be able to program some (just gives you the right mindset).
Don't go public until you know a fair bit! please! I implore you!
(tooooo many people make that mistake...) |
