Hey everyone,

I have been an IRC user for about the last 10 years. Currently I am "in between" networks (I idle on efnet still, but don't really have a current "home"). I have been reading some posts and speculation about the death of IRC and I too remember the warm fuzzy feeling it used to give which is now replaced by a cold indifference of dead channels. I always considered myself as somewhat a IRC purist, but am willing to give this "new outlook" a shot.

That said, I want to run a little experiment. I am a C++ developer and I'm looking to see if your suggestions (with a lot of marketing) could potentially make a difference. I will try to implement features as quickly as my schedule will allow, but that means I would need your help in getting suggestions in quickly.

From reading other posts I've picked up a few big things people think might improve the population of IRC (client-end). I have prior experience in developing IRCd's and IRC clients. I will begin development on whichever you all think would have the bigger impact. Again, from reading other posts, it appears the client-end is where IRC needs the most drastic improvement the soonest.

Here are a few client features which I have read that the (contributing users to the posts) here at SearchIRC feel might improve the quality of IRC:

  • Client-to-Client Video Chat
  • Client-to-Client Talk
  • Group talk (similar to teamspeak I imagine?)

Again, I understand the amount of work such a task will entail as well as the probably "wasted effort" of the project simply due to (as has been said before) mIRC's monopoly over Windows IRC clients. I presume it would be wisest (if I were to develop a client), to develop in Windows first in any and linux if a daemon was requested (I have experience with multithreading and threadpooling clients effectively, etc).

Thanks for your help! And as I said before, since I am "between" networks right now, if there is any network which would like to support me and this project (simply host an "official" channel - the network ideally should possess a stable and friendly userbase which could provide potential testers), please let me know!

Have a look at KvIRC and maybe offer assitance there. The client is already boasting many of the features like DCC Voice and DCC Video (although not all functionality is shown on the offical website). There is also Windows, Linux and Mac versions of it. So I guess it's a good place to start.

Sounds like a good suggestion to me, I'll definitely check it out and see how things are going, thanks!
