We run the Ultimate IRCd ourselves, but for a suggestion me myself i suggest the Freeworld IRCd that you can grab from sourceforge its a modified Hybrid IRCd that still gives you the awsome nicklen and topiclen that users seem to enjoy and some awsome coding from Jeremy to give it alot of features that arent in the stock hybrid and is very stable check it out....
we arent running it simply because our small net is tired of change... but it would be for the better |

Try Viagraircd.
Its at www.viagraircd.com
it runs great for us, and a new beta6 is out that really seems to streamline things.

I would choice bahamut IRCd, and epona services.. they are the most used and most trusted out there (I guess ) I'm self a bahamut user and like it much, but not sure thought if epona is the best, but its good enough I guess :] |

... Viagraircd is based on Bahamut, just with added features like IP Masking and the like.
Its kinda like Bahamut on steroids.

In case you didn't see this page before, here is a run down of all the ircd's scrawl has come across:
http://searchirc.com/ircd-versions
Just like most computers running windows doesn't mean it's the best operating system, this list isn't going to tell you what is best, but it will give you an idea of what's out there and how many people are using which type of ircd. |

| althought hybrid based IRCd's such as FreeWorld, Ratbox, BCNet-IRCd (my ratbox with some additions, a lot of patches from Jeremy are in there), they are well worth it. they are very stable, very fast, and there are a lot of addon services for them such as sentinel. i use BCNet-IRCd on my net and i'm very happy with it. |

To be honest, there is no one perfect ircd.
The ircd type you like depends on what you want out of your ircd.
I'll give some examples :
Unreal - primarily used by people who want to be able to control everything that goes on in their network, and who like everything to be "owned" by someone. Gives huge ammounts of control to opers, and has many neat features, but some would argue is bloated and badly coded. Many controversial features that some like, and some hate.
Ultimate - like unreal, but not as polished. more of a hacker/geek ircd. Lots of features, but not as controlling as unreal... though not as polished either.
Rage - basic, stable ircd. Hard to modify, but good even with many users. Has all the core features, but few compared to unreal.
Bahamut - very stable, very professional ircd. Gives relatively little power to ircops, but is very stable and proven on large networks.
Hybrid - (I'm biased, it's my favourite)...... difficult to categorize. Has advanced features like unreal and ultimate, but they aren't controlling features like 'netadmin' modes, they're more like utility channel and user features like unwanted pm blockers, anonymous chanops, vchans, etc.
Gives opers almost no 'override' ability to control channels, and only accepts a few services (hybserv2, mainly)... however, is very lean, and is proven to work on efnet, one of the biggest irc nets out there.
ratbox - a hybrid-like ircd branched off hybrid a short time ago..... hybrid with mod cons, basically.
-------------------
Imho: if you want:
a server you can control - --- go with unreal
a server you can hack up ---- go with ultimate
a server you can configure just how you want it --- ultimate or hybrid
a server that is good for pretty much anything a user would want --- bahamut or hybrid
a server that is cutting edge, and imho, the most advanced --- hybrid or ratbox
a server that you have to pay thousands of dollars for ---- conferenceroom
I'm biased towards hybrid, (I really like it). So bear that in mind.
I started off on unreal, then moved to ultimate, then to bahamut, and finally to hybrid, as I matured. I don't think that any one is better then the others, I just think they're more suited to different purposes.
