In the past I came across the Janus channel linker, however I couldn't find any real information regarding it besides the odd one or two pages of networks that use it and where to download it. I have since had a play and somewhat figured out how it works but have nowhere to link to!

Anyone know of a central janus 'hub' for lack of a better word, or are janus links mostly just links between 2 networks? Is it only useful/functional when used between 2 or more networks that agree to both use it and share specific channels?
I guess another big question would be; Am I a little late on finding this (is it still maintained/used anywhere)?

I did post this at one point to an IRC mailling list and got back 'Go to <suchandsuch> network and ask <someguy> for details', of course the mentioned guy wasn't there for the week I stopped by, and the network had more tumbleweeds bouncing around than users, so could any info be posted here rather than doing that again Smile

Any other information regarding this would be greatly appreciated!

No, you're not too late. There are still people who use Janus in one way or another and as far as I know it's still being developed by danieldg, which is also one of the developers on the current InspIRCd version.

As you know, Janus acts as server of it's own and is it's own 'hub' really, but you can link several Janus servers together to form a kind of Janus Network (and sharing channels and networks linked to each of the Janus Servers in the Janus Network). I haven't done the last bit myself, but from what I could see in the configuration file this is very possible.

Janus can actually link multiple channels and be linked to multiple servers at the same time. At once time I had 7 channels linked on 3 different networks and each network only had the channels they wanted from the channels offered rather than sharing all the linked channels. It was pretty cool.

For completeness, I should probably add that Janus has two modes. One to link channels on multiple networks linked to it and another to act like a transparent link between to servers of different protocols. You could technically use Janus to link an Inspircd server with an UnrealIRCd server without any real hassle. This mode however is experimental and isn't recommend. Most people just use Janus for it's channel linking capabilities because it's safer.

The only real issues I found with Janus is the need for certain non-standard perl modules (you only really need the DNS one for it to run) and the memory usage climbing from time to time, forcing you to restart it. The memory issue luckily seems to be a problem of the past, going on the latest version.

Personally, I hate the idea of janus. I hate it more than those annoying eggdrops scripted to relay channels. Just my opinion though.

The good thing about janus over eggdrop relay bots is you see all the users on each side where as egg relays you have to type a command [!names] or something similar if i were to use either of these options janus seems to shine over eggdrops relay.

We also have a janus network running on our network come and visit for more details irc://irc.gigirc.com
