|
|
Hi folks, well the time has come that my ancient IRCD is becoming too much of a hinderance and too much work, in compiling it for newer OS. So I am looking into Nefarious and X3 services, any comments?
Also any comments on other IRCD's?
Please no Unreal/Anope comments, I think there has been enough said about them.
Best regards.

nef+x3 is the best combination together, however there is a few others to look at
Inspircd (Pretty much well supported with services)
IRCu / QuakeNet's snircd or asuka (with gnuworld / atheme)
Ratbox / charbydis with either own services or atheme
... or anope
bahamut and andrew chruch's ircservices i find a good combination but dont use them no more as I have stepped away from ircd administration.
Mix and match, set up and play with them and see how one performs with the other until you find one that meets your requirements. |

Greetings callisto,
I have made the difficult decision to switch from IRCU and SRVX to Nefarious and X3 recently and I must tell you that so far I am loving it. There's only a couple of minor bugs that I have found, but the development team is very easy to get along with and they are all very helpful. The features for Nefarious and X3 are excellent!! |

I have to admit I am liking what I read about nef+x3, so I compiled it on a spare shell, now time to play hehehe.
Thanks to all who replied so far to this thread |

We've been using nef+x3 for about a year or so now. Great IRCD and services. |

If you are used to unreal/anope, be prepared to spend extra time getting oriented to nef/x3.
I founded a net about 1.5 -2 years ago and we was unreal/anope and switched more than a year ago and there was some culture shock involved. If you are very familiar with Anope, some of X3's features will seem rather odd but once you get past such oddities, you'll find your switch and troubles well worth it.
I too vote for nef/X3. You may find as I did that nef/x3 offers nearly the same amount of power to opers that is truely needed and much more focused and refined without the newbie admin, pointless crap that's in unreal/anope. |

Hi Katsklaw, lol no the ircd I have been using for years is dreamforge and the services is Azzura, I think Noah used it on his ark. And yes culture shock isnt the word LOL
The downside is I now feel like a kid in a sweet shop, so many features to play with I dont know where to start.
And yes the server isnt live yet, so no worries about upsetting users/staff....YET! |

That's good that you have no staff/users yet. Until you choose what ircd/services you want, you shouldn't have any users. Having staff is ok so long as they know that there may be some software changes as you play and find out what you like about each ircd and finally choose because changing ircds/services can be a PITA after users are used to a certain set of features that are no longer available cuz ya switched. |

| Oh we have staff/users already, all happily chatting away on the old setup. The new setup is running on a dedicated box which is open to myself and staff right now. Our intention is to tweak things so most user functions behave as similar to as it is now. It is a shame we have to change after so many years, however it is called progress, and with so many ircd/services combinations out there, it is actually less time consuming to replace the packages compared to debugging the old and rewriting code. |

well X3 has the ability to bind aliases to existing commands so that made it easier on us to aliases many of the Anope commands into X3 without changing any of X3's src code. Those aliases are stored in a single text file just like it's db is and can be easily transfered from one server to another if you ever need to migrate services to another box.
Additionally, Nef has conf defined aliases with b:lines and B:Lines so you can add all the /nickserv /operserv type aliases from unreal to nef and quite litterally type the exact same command in Nef/X3 that you did in Unreal/Anope.
PM me your addy and I'll come check you out ;P |

I figured I would get my two cents in here I have to say I'm a fan of ratbox and their services. I've not got a negative thing to say about it.
irc.binslashbash.org has been running it for some time now and we love it. |

Just an extension to what you said, B:Lines are the traditional /nickserv like aliases configuration and b:Lines allow you to specify "message prefixes" for "in channel" messages that will get forwarded to services even if services does NOT have a bot in the channel.
For example:
b:!:services.your.net
would forward all channel messages with a ! in front of them to "services.your.net" even when services does not have a bot in the channel. |
