hey,

just got home from work to find a user "Skrowl" handing out the old verbal abuse towards user and other staff members on my network.

he was warned several times not to do it then got worse. as of right now he's been banned and killed from the network.

i dont mind other people from other networks joining the network and chatting away with the people on the network but i dont like it when they come on and flout the rules.

user: Skrowl
network: razor-wire.net

right i think its time for some sleep!

my forums once made it onto spambots addresses... didnt impress me much

I started banning the ips one by one, then my ip deny list got so large I was banning entire B-class and C-class netblocks (effectively, I'd banned turkey, russia, italy, nigeria etc where the spam was originating from).

Spam still poured in so I just banned everybody and went for a default permit setup (allowing only ips that weren't spamming). Granted I lost some userbase for that, but at the end of the day i'd rather lose 1 or 2 members as opposed to wade thru 100 or so spams per hour :/

yup, then you have to tell your wanted userbase of the new URL... and how do you do that on an effective basis? You resubmit to a search engine, or you have links to the new URL. In doing so, you have yet again handled a double-edged sword: telling those who you want on your site, and telling those who you don't want on your site - back to square one
