Hello all-
question for all those at the highest levels in this IRC game, I’m curious as to how you are promoting your network (spamming does not count) If anyone who has had any success could share I few tips I would appreciate it.
Fwiw:
I don’t want to spam, and im not wanting to 'link slut' with other networks, I’m just looking to grow my network and get a solid user base that is not mental.. any ideas?

Hang out on computer forums.
The occasional irc post pops up about how to set up chatrooms. Im not suggesting spamming, but helping and suggesting that you have a server if they are stuck for one |

Yeah I read that link before, how much of thats actually working though? Anyone applying that and seeing user numbers go up?
Also fwiw I didnt just start a network, its been around for a few years -- I am new here though
Forums is a good idea, Ive been doing that .. put the network link in my sig and am offering techsupport or whatever the forums are asking for -- not spamming just hoping that my answers are good enough people will want to checkout the link in my sig .. dunno but figured I'd give it a try. |

just be helpful and friendly.
Personally I hang out on alot of IRC related forums and I also offer advice, end user support .. I mention my net when the time is right .. and I don't mean just because someone says "IRC". My net population has doubled in the last 2 weeks. |

i get my users to put my network address in their signatures
also got listed in a game/programming newsletter that goes out to... 12,500 people each month.
just make the network good and the users will happily recommend it! |

Just being helpfull and friendly won't get you anywhere. I've seen networks that had very friendly IRCops that got no visitors at all in YEARS.
Spamming is wrong, but I'd say it doesn't hurt to invite those you meet and spread the knowledge of the existence of your network around a bit. Forae are a good place to do so, but if you do it too much or too obviously "hey dudes visit irc.youblewmymindnowblowme.com" then it will attract attention from the wrong people "hey 1337 h4x0r wh¥ d0n't u Dd0s m¥ n3tw0rk" or "thou hast been casted away from this forum for violating the rule thou shalt not spam" |
