Just a thought, to help save bandwidth on search irc, but wouldn't it be possible to have a network place there own bot's if they want to be listed, I mean if they are listed on your engine anyways they had to ask to be listed so if they like the feature shouldn't they place a there own bot..
Just a thought... may be a bad idea.. |

| Not a bad idea, however some NetAdmins (esp. some unscrupulous ones) would prefer to use their own bot to falsify the data, bumping up their ranking. At least the scrawl bots are unbiased, and the data is somewhat trustworthy. |

Any Chance for the source code for the script ?
I really like a way to check to see if someone online through my website..
I mean it'll search in 1 network of coures.
and have it running with a simple text saying if the nick is online or not.. |

I was gonna say this myself.
I dunno but wouldn't it be simpler to add a who * after the list but during indexing
I mean, That way the time is spread out, I like the idea of real time, But this also allows people to make Denial of Service attacks etc
I realise that some networks dont support the 'who *' command, But it would be a much easier way than /whois NICK on every network.
This would allow MOST of the users who are 'invisible' to be invisible
or even, do a /who * on other networks during indexing, and if someone did a search and the name was found on that network previously, then do the /whois
Plain and simply, i like the who * idea and would also allow matching wildcards (Which, without being controlled, i probably wouldnt suggest due to spammers)
Thanks,
JD

The problem with searching by hostname/ip is that the only methods available are either A) IRCd dependant, or B) rely on the users being searched for NOT having user mode +i (wg /who) which even then requires IRCd specific /who extensions.
Remember, the whois bot SearchIRC uses, has EXACTLY the same access you as a non-oper do on the networks it looks on. |

Second thing is, each robot takes up a few megs of ram. Lets just imagine each robot takes up 2 megs of ram (they take up more than that, but lets just low ball the number for a second). 2 megs of ram times 800 networks = 1.6 gigs of ram, just to load the robots.
SearchIRC server has a total of 2 gigs of ram. So all networks isn't something that will happen in the near future. |
I wouldn't mind get copy of that and setting it up on one my spare boxs i have to help add some more networks to the search. |

You could work on something like BOPM, i mean.. a module that Admins can themselves Instal on their servers.. which scans. If they want their network to index on SearchIRC. Well i don't know if its possible.. just a suggestion
take care |
