|
|
Since there has been issues and complaints here on SearchIRC about not being able to update information, we at the IRC Wiki decided to create our own solution to the problem. We now offer the ability and chance to add your own Network and it's information to the IRC Wiki. Better yet, we even integrated several of SearchIRC's widgets into our Wiki (which is kindly provided by SearchIRC to begin with so remember to thank Jason for it and not us - we only made it work with the Wiki ).
You can go here to see which networks have been added already, but you'd probably want to go here to find out how to add your own network to the wiki. So what are you waiting for? Go create your own network page now |

It's a work in progress. I still have to work out how to make template fields optional like rank or logo, but we're slowly getting there Hopefully this gives the people something to do while they wait for SearchIRC submissions and network information requests to go through.
I also want to do a 'featured network' (from our own listing) widget for the main page. Might be interesting to see my meagre skills accomplish that...
PS: People shouldn't forget to create their user 'profile' page. We now offer Social Networking functionality where the user page used to be. So create a profile, add friends and write on people's boards |

OK, I've made the logo and rank in the Network Infobox optional. I also fixed rank so you don't have to mess with the widget anymore. Just fill in your network name (like it's named here on SearchIRC) and go.
Enjoy! |

| Although we have made a pretty easy to follow tutorial (found here). Some of you may still encounter problems, and may need assistance beyond the tutorial, so feel free to come onto the main #irc-wiki located on irc.gigirc.com, make a post on our forums. Or simply reply to this thread with your problem. We will be more than happy to help. |

We're open to feature, plugin and widget request, so please state it here or on the Wiki's forum. We'll see what we can do |

A better server would be great man (from what i gather its on bluehost?) I talked it over with Bertrum about how slow IRC-Wiki is at the best of times (He agree'd with me). |

I talked it over with Bertrum about how slow IRC-Wiki is at the best of times (He agree'd with me). | At the current rate that the IRC Wiki is growing, it's becoming increasingly harder to move. Not that it's impossible, it just going to take about 45 minutes to copy, another hour to copy on to a new host and then probably 2 hours setting everything up again so it works properly. The domain move could take between 15 minutes to 3 days to propagate properly depending where in the world you are.
However I don't think the web host is completely to blame for some slow downs. Some of the extensions and widgets/templates on the page might also be an contributing factor. Bluehost is one of the top 3 web hosts in the world, so I don't really believe their speed is that bad compared to our previous host (byethost). That said, I really do try trimming down extensions and widgets to be as fast and unintrusive as possible.
Apache itself has speed and scalability issues for Wikis which is why Wikipedia tends to go with something like lighttpd, gzip compression and caching. With my own comparisons we're still equal to the speeds of Wikipedia even though we generate pages on demand rather than compress and cache them. The reason why we don't do either is because this may well break some of the widgets and templates we have going on the Wiki. |

| I've used BlueHost for two Drupal sites, they've both been pretty slow. |

If I had my own way, IRC Wiki would be hosted on it's own box with an http daemon set-up especially for it. Something with a little better load and scalability support than Apache can offer. Eh, but let's see what I can do |

Rarely are we ever fortunate enough to run the exact setups we want!
Keep up the good work. |
