| Every kid with a cable connection and a windows machine can run unreal or pay 5 bucks a month for a cheap ass shell and run unreal or inspircd and beg folks to go to his network....and what you usually find if you know this person, is the same people on his network that were on the network you met him on. Its all crap these days. Very few people actually take pride and do irc the right way anymore. To most people its all about flexing their psuedo internet power and OMGIEZ I CAN KILLZ YOU! Irc is becoming a dead cause. Its sad. Whats worse is that even big networks like freenode split more than divorcies on judge judy and they make excuses and such when the truth is, they dont even pay for those servers...they are donated. The actual owners of those servers just decided to use their bw for something they deemed more nessecary than irc and caused a netsplit.. So a few thousand users get thrown off of freenode because they dont pay for their own servers...yet they ask for donations....for what? So they can follow in lilos footsteps and steal a quarter of a million dollars for a RV and an illegal alian mexican nanny while claiming they live in a trailer with no running water or toilet? Sorry for the rant...freenode pisses me off. It should piss more people off..but the majority of people prefer to be sheep and just buy into their bullshit. As for the majority of small irc networks....they are run by kids or even adults that have no lives taht just need some way to make themselves feel powerful in life....its really sad. This attitude runs people off of irc and drives them to use IM protocols like msn, aim, jabber, etc.... People that act in this manner should shut their small ass irc networks down and just give up because having an oline on your own irc network doesnt make you important, being an oper on anyones irc network doesnt make you important. It also doesnt make you intelligent or better than anyone else...yet the majority of people act this way. This is why IRC is becoming less popular by the day. /endrant |

Still on the anti-unreal buzz, aye mike?
It's been said at least once before, and it warrants repeating: If you think you can do better, not only are you welcome to do so - you are encouraged to; otherwise shut the fsck up |

| Not really on an anti unreal kick, just on a kick about the 'tudes of all these kids with their home based ircds and using unreal as an example since it will run on windows. My reason for running my own small ass network is that Ive done so since 95 or 96. Its a genuine hobby of mine and Ive done it for a long time. I see no reason to stop now. I have friends that expect me to keep atleast one ircd up since Ive been doing it so long. |

| Also at one time I had a quite sizeable network running irco (developed by JL and Quick from otherside irc that is now gone). So I havent always run a small ass network. I do actually have experience running a network with more than 50 users and not having half of them being operators with more servers than users like most of these kids today. |

Its very hard to do so when every kid with 5 bucks that wants to be "mr cool ircop" can run an ircd and run around poaching users, offering half of them olines if they join his or her network...... shit like this is another reason irc is going dead. If this was not the case, I damn sure could do better, believe that! I have before, and if you cant tell, I am trying to do so right now, without any encouragment. |

| Same ol' rant hey? I doubt any of those kind of IRCops and Server owners will ever read this, so why bitch about it? It's a reality and it's an even greater reality that these kinds of Networks die out VERY quickly. |

| I really wish it was the 90s again, IRC was much better back then. Irc also had better content, users, and ideals back then. If it werent for people like me, every ircd would be full of idiots flexing their psuedo internet power just for fun and making a mockery of the medium that irc was meant to be. |

BS.
IRC has seen a decline in users for one simple reason: people moved on, and this next generation hasn't taken a liking to IRC as we perhaps did. Unreal is not to blame for that, these "kids" running "small ass networks" are not to blame for it, and so on. If anything, it has been our stubbornness and unwillingness to make some radical changes (and I'm not saying IRC should morph in anyway).
While there have been enhancements to the protocol over the years, not a great deal has changed. It's been leapfrogged by the plethora of other options that are available out there today. And users, by and large, generally tend to prefer those other options.
One area where interest in IRC tends to keep growing is in the OSS community, and given who early adopters of IRC tended to be, that's not surprising.
And most people tend to think everything was better back in their day. We tend to be nostalgic about stuff that was once new/exciting for us. |

| Did you not notice me saying that I was just using unreal as an example and I was not on an anti-unreal kick? You just wasted all that space for nothing. Way to go, moron. |
