| It's one thing to route donations directly to a charity, but giving money to a third party, especially using paypal is asking for trouble. |

| It is dubious to donate to the network and not the actual charity itself. |

For anyone actually interested, you can text the word "HAITI" to 90999. American Red Cross will charge 10 dollars to your phone bill. Nice easy way to help out |

The phone texting thing is not a good way to do it. You text it now, it won't hit till you pay your bill. So in a month it might be sent - then it still takes time to transfer the money to who can use it.
The people who need help need it now, not in 1-2 months. |

| Well, your phone company is charged the $10, which is then passed on to you in your bill at the end of the month, iirc |

| yes, hence a 90 day delay between donating and the money being delivered. |

| I'll partially disagree with the both of you - in quite a few cases, the phone company ends up paying for your text/call, but they pass the bill onto you at the end of the month, so while the charity gets the donation then and there, it could very well be 1-2 months before the telco gets its money back. Do note, however, that this isn't always the case |

The teleco isn't fronting the money. The money is paid when you pay your bill. Otherwise people can text hundreds of dollars in donations then not pay the bill.
| Quote: | Both Mobile Accord (which is a for-profit company, but operates 100 percent pass-through mobile donation campaigns through the mGive Foundation) and the Mobile Giving Foundation admit it usually takes 90 days from the time of donation to the time it is received by the intended charity, in part because they are collected through each customer’s normal cell phone billing cycle. That’s eons in disaster recovery time.
Earlier today mGive posted to Twitter, “We are currently working with the carriers to reduce this window. We will tweet when he have an update on this.” |
That is completely different than this:
| Quote: | | Verizon Wireless said it had advanced $2.98 million in mobile donations committed by its customers to Haiti. “Time is of the essence, and it makes sense for us to toss aside our normal financial processes to get money where it can do the most good, in the fastest way possible,” said Verizon Wireless president and CEO Lowell McAdam in a statement. |
More of a one time push of cash. |

If anyone wants to see photos off the streets, this guy has a lot that you don't see on the news. Some photos are not for the timid. Click the thumb on the right to advance to the next photo.
