Anyone run channel links? What i mean by channel links is a bot relaying chat through many networks on the same channel. I noticed it's good in starting up a small irc that way users can still chat with other users even if theres only 20-30 users on the server. If anyone has a channel he or she links with other networks id love to welcome them to my network. Contact me here my names John thanks.
[I don't think your network in bold was needed for this thread. -PB] |

Which bot you using? I know Janus is pretty powerful, but very resource extensive (may require a restart once or twice to free the resources). I also know of several eggdrop scripts that work like this, except it just acts as a relay and doesn't create virtual clients on the other server(s) linked to it and vice versa.
I guess it's down to preference, hey? |

Janus is written in perl and acts similar to linked servers - only it links channels across several networks. Can also be run off the same shell as your IRC server... |

Probably because channel linking comes at a risk and a price.
The Risk being that you may lose more users with this than you'll gain. This may be because the other networks your linked to might try and steal your users or abuse the channel linker in other ways that annoy current users in the channel - either way they'll leave. If it's the main attraction of your network, then they'll just end up leaving your network for good.
The Price would be the resources you have to put forward for this project to work. It's a whole lot of bandwidth and system resources for something with such a minimal benefit, so most networks will go without.
This two put together is the main reasons most people avoid linking channels, unless it's a large and popular channel with several copies on other networks or there is some large project that requires it (like say IRC security). |

Assuming said server is ConvictedIRC.NET, perhaps if you didn't have your entourage of kids spamming it everywhere.. People would want to link with you.
Not to mention the flood that was attempted on my server when my users joined there and expressed their distaste for your spam.
Keep up the win! |

The irony... He's not the one doing it. There is this botnet owner that, once he finds offense with your network or you will spam other networks to blacken your network's name... Don't believe me? Subscribe to the IRC-Security's mailing list and you'll quickly find out that it's VERY common and normally by the SAME person and NO, it's not by p2p or leet or anybody you may think it is.
Now stop this blame game and actually READ the forum rules on your left side - the one in yellow. |
