|

Hi all,
Basically im pulling my hair out!!, currently using Unreal & Anope and I am developing a new website. One of the main driving forces for the rebuild of the site was to have a single sign on/registration process.
From my understanding I need live SQL or XML-RPC support to do this. From my research i can see Epona (Live SQL) and atheme (XML-RPC) seem to be the only 2 services that support this.
Epona seems to be dead in terms of development and athemes website is somthing left to be desired (just tried to find documentation - none found)
I dont mind if I have to change IRCd and/or services.
My questions are :-
1) In your opinions what combination of IRCd and Services will achieve this.
2) Are there any other recommendations, products, or anything for that matter that will help me.
Ive spent the last 4 hours on google and I just need someone to put me straight.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Kind Regards
Niall |

Yes I heard that too about anope, and I have asked about it, I have been told that its quite far off, probably 2 releases as its been pushed back to 1.9.2 (currently 1.9.0 released 9th Feb 09)
So it still leaves me high and dry till then which I really cant be doing |

| currently the solution to this is to build the services package yourself. However, considering some networks already have it, you could look into what software they run and build an addon for it as you know it has been done before. |

Yes, we are planning LiveSQL initially for 1.9.2 but with the view of continued development further in 1.9.x to ensure it's both feature rich but also not a rushed half assed attempt.
Rob did toy with XML-RPC some time ago and got a pretty fluid system working but it seemed that nobody was interested in helping him test it/expand as necessary so it kind of got back burnered.
We're keen to take in user ideas in the feature requests section of the forum, and urge you to check out our 1.9 Todo. |

| Well i know everyone has there own view on everything maybe i shouldn't have just come out and said that, just seems that anope is the "easy" way out version it doesnt come with alot of user friendly features ive used it and havent been impressed what so ever, its just another rip off. |

| better help system for users, e.g !help with command list and subcategories. inchannel !command support not just "added on" hostserv, sql not flatpacked. |

You claim it's the "easy way out" and then that it lacks "user friendly features" ? - That seems a little contradictory to me.

!help within channels, which service would you expect to respond to that? Chanserv or Nickserv? - Normally if you want help you would issue commands privately rather than annoying people in the channel I'd have thought?
SQL is something that is being redeveloped in 1.9 but you'd know that when you replied to this thread which was untouched for 9 months.
"Added on" hostserv? What does hostserv not do that you believe it should?
Elaborating on your criticisms is the only way to actually discuss them as opposed to a blank "it sucks because I said so". |

I'm sorry but the stupidity of Meebies comment is unbearable, just to say anope sucks, and it is a ripoff is totally ridiculous. I don't see why the anope developers would even bother to waste their time having an in channel !help command when they already have indepth help for there services, which INCLUDE subcatergories.
If I type /msg nickserv help
| Quote: | -NickServ- REGISTER Register a nickname
-NickServ- GROUP Join a group
-NickServ- GLIST Lists all nicknames in your group |
That is returned along with 30odd other options, and if I think I am unsure about one command, say group(subcatergory) all I type is: /msg nick help group and this is what returns: (very informative)
| Quote: | -NickServ- Syntax: GROUP target password
-NickServ-
-NickServ- This command makes your nickname join the target nickname's
-NickServ- group. password is the password of the target nickname.
|
Along with 20odd other lines of infomation surrounding that one subcatergory. I don't think anope's help could be better !help is just unnecessary and will cause problems in channels floods/users complaining.
And also that is the first complaint about hostserv that I have seen, I have used it for years and never had any problems with it.
(If it's not broke don't fix it) |

Eh, All I say, Meebie, is if you think you can do better then do it.
It's easy to criticize and complain about the work that exist - it's harder actually doing something about it. Maybe it's a side-effect I learned from doing support (even in a simple #help channel), but I'd rather google a solution, actually read the *fine* manual, find a module that adds the functionality I want or even *gasp* actually write it myself. |
