You've all heard of neocrap, er I mean stats. Why do so many people use it?, I don't see the point in it to be honest, I've seen networks with it installed on their hub boxes and whatever, neostats ends up crashing in the meantime. I've always thought they ran it because they didn't know about the logchan command in Anope. (Well, yeah, anope; half of the people that run this software probably uses anope and no other service package). so what is it, they don't know the command?

</rant>

...

but seriously. neostats' code is a horrible mess. it looks like something that a mirc scripter would've done. (No offense to the creators, if they're on this forum), I heard the neostats project was dropped can someone confirm this so I can crack open a bottle of wine?

Yes neostats has ceased development, however the purpose of having a statistical package seperate from a service package was indeed a good success, though I only ever used neostats for a very short time and didnt like it myself the fact it was modularised meant that any part of the network could host it and run custom modules outside of their primary channel/nick services packages.

The code was a mess and I agree some parts still are, but for the job it did it did it well for the mess some parts were in. A lot of the code carried on from geostats which was a blundering mess and was mainly focused around unrealircd and mainly dreamforge derived ircd's

Fish and the other coders at neostats however some of the nicest coders i found and the time they put into developing neostats was unbelievable, including bug fixes, but time to move onto better things like denora now tbh which has web interface to go with it.

Problem with Denora now is that it's going to be merging back into Anope. So go figure. =P

The plan for that is that you will be able to use Anope with JUST the Denora side, and have all the Anope features disabled.

There is a lot of work going on with Anope 1.9 at the moment so stay tuned to find out more.

Myself i feel i like NeoStats. Ive ran it on all the different networks i have ran. I have never really liked the logusers for anope and prefered connectserv. plus the Statserv module comes in use when i need certain statistics for some servers.

I can agree the code is a mess but nothing is ever perfect is it?

I also agree some of the modules for neostats are a complete waste of time... i.e SpamServ!?

but i still feel its a particular good piece of software. Smile

All software has it's good and bad points, and no matter how organized the code is or is not, it has been a quite useful tool for networks all around Mirc. Considering all of these programs (ircds, services, ect) come from unfunded open source projects through the general public, I'd have to say programs such as NeoStats have been done quite decently.

You better watch out for Inspircd's windows interface then Wink - it's quickly catching up to a payed for IRCd like OfficeIRC Razz

Mind you, I'm biased to open source - like take some Linux's - they prove that something can be free, well written and powerful Smile

I was being sarcastic :o

It'd cost me all I have (and then some) to 'upgrade' to officeirc.
