Hello All,

My network and I are in the process of doing some restructuring for the upcoming new year. After several discussions, we have decided to overhaul our network and head in the direction of the gaming community, since most of us play first person shooters.

Our network has been around since late 2005, and since then we have primarily been running a combination of Anope & Unreal, though it has been easy to use, we are beginning to have some stability issues as our network grows, and its because of this that we decided to head in a new direction.

So, with that being said, I have looking for some suggestions and a good stable IRCd/Services package. It dosent necessarily need to have all the "bells & whistles" of Unreal & Anope, but security & stability are a must have.

I am also interested in what proxy scanning tools are popular. With this, we have been using Neostats 3, with SercureServ & OPSB, but have also been running into stability issues with this thing consuming damn near full CPU usage.

I trust you guys will stear me in the right direction! So thank you for your suggestions and comments Smile

Oh, yeah Happy Holidays! Smile

Nefarious IRCu
X3 Services

I've been hearing they are the best combination. I'm personally sticking to InspIRCd and Anope for now. I've also read that Nefarious and X3 aren't for the faint of heart, but I haven't done any testing myself on them.

X3 and Nefarious can do just about anything. I can't go and list every feature but im sure if you visted their site you could get an idea or perhaps try them.

i would recommend you find new servers if you're having stability issues - hundreds of networks with more users than yours are running unreal and anope with no problems.

as for proxy scanners, BOPM is probably the popular choice.

Since our stability issues started we have changed hosting providers, but we decided to go all out and try going in a new direction with the ircd & services. I'd like to be able to code my own but brain lacks that knowledge...lol

you could try shadowircd5, which is combining stability of charybdis and ratbox with user-friendliness of shadowircd4 and unrealircd Smile

come visit us at irc.shadowircd.net #shadowircd

as for services - you could use Atheme (now used on freenode)

irc.atheme.org #atheme

sorry for my english btw, I'm from Russia Smile

I would definitely recommend X3 and Nefarious. X3 can do channel and account registration, spam control, fakehosts, and more.

http://evilnet.sourceforge.net/ for both.

Unlike most all other ircd/services combos, Nef and X3 are written to work specifically with each others features. While X3 will work with ircu, it's designed for Nef and vice versa.

This is different than other packages where the ircd can work with 5+ services packages and services packages that can support 10+ ircds.

Really, it comes down to features you want in your services I suppose. They all offer the same thing, but some also have a few key differences/additions which somewhat set them apart from the others. Probably the best thing you could do (if possible) is setup a testnet server off of your main network and test them until you find one you like and feel comfortable with. Having said that, here's a link to a few of the more popular services for you:

<Note: These are the latest stable releases unless otherwise noted>
Atheme-3.1.2:
http://www.stack.nl/~jilles/irc/atheme-services-3.1.2.tgz

Anope:-1.8.0:
http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/anope/anope-1.8.0.tar.gz

Srvx: (No longer under development)
http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/srvx/srvx-1.3.1.tar.gz

Hybrid2: (No longer under development)
http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/hybserv2/hybserv-1.9.3.tar.gz

Epona: (Release candidate)
ftp://ftp.pegsoft.net/epona/epona-1.5rc3.tar.gz

Magick Irc Services: (No longer under development)
ftp://ftp.neuromancy.net/pub/neuromancy.net/Magick-II/Magick-2.0.tar.gz

BewareServ: (No longer under development)
http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bewareserv/bewareserv-2.2.0.tar.bz2

IrcServices 5.14:
http://www.ircservices.za.net/download/ircservices-5.1.14.tar.gz

I tried to throw in a mixture of them, just to give you an idea of what all is out there. I hope you find the services you're looking for, good luck with the search.
