| seeing as it's impossible to get a windows version of ircu, and my disinterest in using unreal, are there any networks that are using any ircx server software? |

yeah, good link however i was a little concerned about
| Quote: | | Note that beware ircd has and has always had stability problems. it can be used perfectly fine for testing or a small irc server, and it is probably one of the better choices you have on windows. but with many local users (not sure how many) it will have problems such as excessive cpu usage, hanging/crashing, etc. if you need a server for many users or you find stability and uptime important, you should run a real ircd, on a real OS. |
anyone had any good experiences with it? |

| Maybe you'd have better luck installing andLinux and running the Linux version of your preferred ircu variant (in Windows). I haven't tried, but it could work in theory. |

I started with FreeBSD, it's not that hard to learn. OK I had a history of MS-DOS behind me anyway so that probably helped. |

I started as a beginner using RedHat which seemed easy enough..
As far as the bircd question, I have experimented with it in the past, and it isn't a very stable ircd. It does happen to crash, but not near as much as claimed. I haven't really noticed a whole lot of bugs. If you're just looking for an irc server for you and a few friends, then go for the bircd. But if you're looking to have a 24/7 network with more than 10 users, you're going to want a linux ircd. |

|

I ran unrealirc on windows server 2000 and the on server 2003 for 6 months from home before moving to shells and FreeBSD, How I did it was install both the same unrealircd/anope/neostats had one using 6660-6666 and the other using ports 6667-6669.and when I had to reboot for updates or any thing else, there was always a server live so they could connect too and port forward to the other server. If you just use the server for Ircd and almost nothing else it will run ok , all I had was apache/Perl bot/and unrealirc and it ran ok but we did not have more than 30 users. If you not going to use your windows like an every day box ,I can't see why you don't get 6 months run without rebooting(for major updates)I still run a windows server at home for my local website and radio station.
(Windows server 2003)
Server uptime: 64 days 1 hour 52 minutes 0 second
Reboot since: Thursday. July 24th, 2008. 12:18 pm
Learning about FreeBSD I got a book called "Building an INTERNET SERVER with FREEBSD6"
Helps you with most installs, printed in 2006, lucky I have a spare box to install and reinstall and break and spare time. There are loads of books because I am from the UK I get them in from U.S.A at half the price. |
