I'm wondering... Would it be useful to allow users to vote on IRC networks and to make some sort of ranking based on those votes?

I assume it could be interesting for people trying to find a network; a high usercount doesn't mean it's a good network.

Dunno if it already came up. So sorry if it did .

The ranking isn't based on 'best', it's based on size.

Under each network, there is a network forum that allows users to provide feedback about the network.

I could hack that code and allow users to also provide a rating, but I don't consider it as important as eventually getting the networks sorted into categories that allow for browsing of networks like we can browse channels in the Chat Directory. e.g; look for networks focusing on Anime, or focusing on the region Europe.

Let me know how others feel

Well, most of the people I know only go to 2 or 3 networks maximum. When you consider that, most people will only vote (accurately, anyway) on the networks they already go to. Since the nets with the bigger user count will naturally get more votes, this will only mirror the results already recieved from size-based ranking. To me, it doesn't seem like it would be very effective. But, since the goal of SearchIRC is (I think) to help users find IRC channels related to their interests, maybe it would be a good idea to let each category for channels be ranked according to user vote. That, to me, would be a little more useful to the common user looking for people with common interests.

anifinder, a channel rating system is already in progress.

You'll note each channel listed now has a link to add a review and rate the channel:

#searchirc Established Freshness factor: 99.5
Users: Current: 7, Avg: 8, Max: 12
Forum: MyChannel
Network: SearchIRC
Review: five star ranking with 3 reviews
Directory: IRC > Help
Topic: Help channel for http://searchirc.com

Click on the reviews and you can rate the channel and add your own comments to back up the rating. When enough channels have been reviewed, Jason intends to feature the top rated channels in some way. (I am sure he can fill us in on the details). So definitely take a few moments to add a review and promote (or pan) the channels you visit. :)

mregit, you know, I didn't even think about the new channel review system. You're right though, my mistake. I still stand by my original statement that it's a good concept. Smile
