There's no such thing as an international copyright, BUT, most countries have agreements with each other regarding copyright infringement - which you can find out about on http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ38a.pdf

Australia will let Americans sue their citizens for copyright infringement and vice versa, so if you use work without permission you can be subject to fines up to $30,000 for each instance, plus you have to pay all of their attorney's fees. If it is found that you used their work deliberately the fines increase to $150,000 per instance.

Wouldn't it be cheaper, to send an email asking permission. Or even doing something yourself? Not saying you yourself, but whoever would copy a copyright.

That would be a much smarter and less time consuming and it'll save you several hundred thousand dollars....

It's also the polite thing to do, rather than shamelessly ripping it off without crediting the original author.

It doesn't matter. Mexico, Australia, Germany, Japan - every country where you CAN do business has copyright laws that gives the owner of the material legal recourse to recover damages if anyone uses their property without their permission. If countries didn't have this protection, business would move someplace where they do.

You're like the kid standing behind the counter at the candy store saying, "Can I steal this?" NO! "Can I steal this one?" NO! "Then can I steal THIS one?" NO!. No no no no no. You cannot steal ANY of it. Get the message?

Someone has gone to the trouble of MAKING the thing you want. Ask permission to use it. Tell them HOW and WHERE you are going to use it. Most of the time they will be flattered and allow you to use their material as long as you give them credit. But if they say no, its like a channel ban - its their right, don't argue, don't try to get around it. Don't use it. Move on.
