| I am trying to submit my network here, Paradise, but it has been rejected because the DNS is irc.parad1se.net not irc.paradise.net. I have just sent a email to owner of paradise.net asking for a CNAME, but until then could you guys just add me? My network is Paradise, and im fuckin sick of people calling it Parad1se and thats why I dont want it to be added as that.... |

why not just register paradiseirc.net ???
And to be totally honest, its the users that make a network, not the name |

paulmer2003, although we definitely sympathize with your predicament, we require networks to own the name they want to be listed as, in the form of a domain name.
The reason for this is pretty simple - while many networks simply wanted to tame an unweildy domain name, others submitted names that had NOTHING to do with their network and in fact were often legally owned by other parties. When eastern europe and southeast asia got high speed internet, we were innundated with network submissions for "Undernet", "DALnet" and "EFnet" It made sense to those admins - they wanted to be just like their favorite network, or wanted the people of their country to have a famous named network all their own. When a network split, BOTH sides would want the name - and if a major channel decided to start their own network and felt that the name should move to new servers along with the users, we would have three groups demanding the name. We got submissions for "MIRC" and "Microsoft.com" from people who admired those products but had no connection to the companies. There were some who fancied themselves internet police agencies and submitted the name of their network as "FBI.gov", or "KGB.ru". Others seemed to lose all common sense and named their networks after whatever illegal activity took place in their channels.
SearchIRC had to have rules. The most logical (and legally sound) solution for us was to require a network to OWN and USE the name it wanted to be called on SearchIRC in the form of a domain name.
No exceptions. A rule isn't fair if we break it for some and not for others. |
