Under current EU law, countries still retain their soverignty and their right to enact laws on their own populace. The establishment of the EU won't do crap to help your situtation.

However, if you hand more power to the EU president, that may do something. But that will not happen for a good while.

As I understand it, any EU directives or regulations passed (which must be entered into the statute books of member states, but by different methods) supercedes member state legislation.

As a direct result of the European Convention on Human Rights, the UK passed the Human Rights Act 1998. Now, this act only allows UK courts to declare an Act of Parliament in the UK as incompatible with the Human Rights Act (the judges are now bound to take into account the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights). However, this is likely to mean that legislation is changed, and as I understand it if the government does not act then the case can be brought befor ethe European Court of Human Rights.

I'm against giving more power to the EU president, rather, I'd like to see increased power given to the EU parliament (hence the MEPs) as opposed to the EC.
