The only thing IRC is missing that the others do have is voice chat and cam chat, which if there was a way to set that up, IRC would knock the rest out of the competition. Not sure if there is a way that could ever be developed truly. If it could or is in developments, that would be terrific and IRC would be able to keep up with the other mainstream chats. I don't really mind IRC being sort of underground compared to the other chat options though because it keeps most of the people who I can't read their typing any way off IRC. Some of the best chatters seem to find IRC and many IRC users tend to dismiss silly things like a/s/l and aohell talk. We have it, but not nearly as bad. |
Twitter is the new IRC. |

I would have to agree, although I have used IRC the longest (going on 15 years) This pretty pointless, the other IMing proggies are ment for one - on - one conversations, while IRC is more of a group thing. And on the point of voice over IP or cam Over IP, get something like Ventrilo or Skype. My staff and I recently started using Ventrilo to do our network Staff meetings, its easier to get your point across that way, and setting up a private vent server isnt hard at all.
But all in all, like ARcanUSNUMquam stated, theres no true way to compare these, but being the nerd and old fart that I am, I would have to pick IRC hands down, I have forged many great friendships online and IRL over the years through IRC. |
