hi,
i'm currently pondering changing away from the unreal ircd and move onto another ircd. i know that most networks use unreal for ease of use and that it sort of dont get you nowhere now when trying to build up a network.
has anyone moved off unreal and it made your network better? as in users liking it and getting new interest from people wishing to link.
p.s. dont start pimping ircds to me, i can do the research. dont want a arguement about ircds here, thank you. |

I've yet to meet a non-techy user who actaully cares what ircd it is, as long as they can set the channel modes there used to, they dont seem to care much. The only users who do are the techy ones, who will no doubt have about a million opnions on what you should be running.
Regarding linking, if your goal is to link and merge with a bigger network, it might be worth just taking the opinion of "i'll use whatever ircd they use" and find a network/people that suit you. |

It is fairly easy to move to another IRCd. My advice would be to establish a testing environment on the production servers first, get it all worked out, then kill unreal and rehash so that the new IRCd will listen on port 6667.
This will allow for an easy upgrade. |

personally I came to a network as a new network admin and it was running on Unreal.
I switched it to another IRC server, mainly just because I was more familar with that.
The users are much happier now, because that switch has greatly reduced abuse. (Granted, this could probably also have been achieved by proper configuration of Unreal...) |

Depends what you're really looking for.
If you're looking for ircds that have dozens of features, etc. I guess stick to unreal.
For secure and stability, probably woud be ratbox, etc.
Just specify what kind of features and network you want, then it'd be easier to recommend what ircds to use |

He wasn't asking for advice on what ircd to run, he was asking if moving away from unreal has made your network a better place. I personally can't comment on that though. |

Ah, well it sure made my life easier
When I switched, I stopped having to worry about a lot of oper-abuse, felt more stability and a lot easier configuring. |
