My network has had two similar mergers where the target networks both were required to switch to hybrid to link to us and it didn't seem to be a problem, however they both used unreal and anope before and so also like your former linker threw fits and demanded we use unrealircd because it "had more commands".
Silly stuff, so I've decided to just allow links and nothing more, however if another network was willing to switch to hybrid (or already ran it) and wanted to link I'd probably concider it, but not from another IRCd. |

Same here. I would never merge, but I do accept links from people who run UnrealIRCd and / or are familiar with Anope.
People who started their server / network as to support a game clan are also very welcome since our network is partially dedicated to gamers and supporting clans / games / gameservers and we can also contribute by supporting gameclan websites. |

Buy a domain from noip.com and theres something about a DNS there...
Buy a IRCD or vps or ded server (usually cost from 5$ to IRCD to several hundred dollars for ded and about 50$ for a quality vps with a few ips..
then config unreal ircd...
Don't try to host a IRC server at your computer

merges are never good and yeah I dont think how anyone can think they can work.all you create is more people to want power.power can be a good thing in hands that know how to use it.power is for control.if you need to control a situation then power is a great thing to have.
but thats another subject..on to network merges..my answer is no dont do it.

Mergers are what you make of them. You can't accurately say they work or they don't because the thruth is that some do and some don't.
There are networks that merged years ago and are still together, so that's prove that mergers can in fact work. |

true..they can work but I think for the most part they dont.
but you have a valid point that indeed they do sometimes.

| For the most part they don't work because people are in such a rush to make their network become bigger suddenly that they will allow almost anyone to either link or merge to them. That's dangerous and a setup for failure. Those who actually truly care about their networks will be cautious about merging and will do it slowly, and only once all of the admins from each network have meet together, talked about all of the potential details and have a clear and specific plan of action to take to allow the transition to go as smoothly as possible. |

| I agree with furious. I've seen alot more merges that haven't worked than have worked. Stringent policies and good applications help to weed out the ones who just want to link. I tend to want to know people for quite a while even if they must hang out on the network before I will consider their server for linking. People who just want to link to have a server on ur network won't want to wait that long, and they'll leave. |
