An excellent policy. Unless it's unlawful, censorship has no place in IRC.

G'Day Guys,
My server irc.superbands.net is the worlds first IRCd dedicated to unsigned and independant musicians with original music, ou clients and thier respective fan bases are censor free as i believe freedom of speech is paramount and sometimes a swear word here and there can really help one express thier true feelings my staff have been trained only to jump on swearing if it is directed at somebody in a malicious manner so i feel as long as your staff are trained i dont have a problem with it

In my experience, networks that allow "anything", promise no censorship, or promote "freedom of speech" aren't talking about swear words. These are the networks where you find an abundance of child porn channels, violent sex channels, credit card trading, ddos botnets, warez channels, etc. So you don't get any surprises, its best to be specific about your network policies - and post them (or a link to them) in your motds.

Most networks also draw a distinct line between channel rules and network rules.

Channel operators are typically responsible for channel rules, which is where you'd find rules against things like cursing. Network operators have rules about clones, flooding, bots, and other generalized non-channel behavior.

The line between the two can bleed together on small networks where it is possible to police each channel, but those situations are usually limited to very small networks or networks with 'family' type atmospheres where it is network policy to keep language restricted to child friendly.

It can also depend on the way the server is setup.

With irc.superbands.net we have rules set so that no one can make any channels without express permisions from our Network Services Admin so that makes things a little more secure in the channels department.

With our network channels are watched on a daily bases were a moderator or ircop is there to keep things in order which helps a lot.

We do not allow warez channels mp3 channels and other channels that infringe the Copyright Act unless the music is personaly made by the artist/artists that are with us.

Yes, I say very clear this days some forums who is the "timador" of the IRC world this days. In April'04. who sell commercial software with less stage of develop of the opensouce available.

Of course this happen before, other experts with experience of Dalnet, EFnet or Undernet are saying the same than me.

I know that Webmaster Inc is a american company and they lile speak about NASA tracking objects are things like that.

Yes, I can do the same with Visual Route from some webpage and Im more quick than them ever. For this is so important protect the users, with algoritm of croack keys that they don't have. All the IPs adress are visible in their networks.

Of course, I don't like all. But all of us have a opinion and internet is a public media. In my own contry IRC-Hispano sell the nick2 for 1 €, and it's so easy install this service. I don't like too this.

I need do other thigs this days ...

But there is my advice

"Please people of the IRC why need The Sentinel, we need that the software that born for to be free like the IRC will be free for ever ..."

The future is in the services, only the little companies sell licenses of software today

Regards

Julio

Anything except the activity that damages the network (Ddos, botwars etc.)

Irc should be free. That free word doesnt just mean money.

Yes, IRC should be free but some things are NOT acceptable, aswell as illegal things like child porn are morally wrong and not accepatble anywhere, online or offline and should not be tolerated anywhere.
