probably, but people don't generally chat on them because each time a server hoster downloads a file using their browser, or reboots, everyone gets booted off (this isnt just about bandwidth but utilization of ram and cpu time). |

1. I've never had a problem when I've downloaded something when running a Windows IRCD (yes, with users connected).
2. _Everybody_ gets "booted off" when the server reboots, no matter what the OS. |

well do you know a name of one of those unsecure widows servers?
and i wasn't really refering to anything, i don't really see how windows is all THAT unstable im yea it's not the best thing in the world, buteven a home computer doesn't do waht your talkin about, a nice athlon 64, 2.8Ghz with 1gig ram can easily hold a few users, and allow you to download some things, i wasn't talkin like a webchat size windows server im just asking if anyone knows of a windows server.. then name of the server would be a little great too.. |

using windows as a secure base for anything is like trying to stop a tsunami with a block of swiss cheese :/
Okay, I like the Windows GUI and all, and I do prefer the windows environment for a lot of what I do, but to run a "live" server on Windows seems just daft to me. |

wait until you load up limewire or go to play your latest first-person-shooter game, and watch everyone ping out before you get back |

| Well just alter process priority. Just don't blame me if your FPS framerate drops. :) |

I'd bet on the cheese anyday
With regards to IRCds, most these days offer Win32 builds, InspIRCd, UnrealIRCd, bircd, the list goes on. Some are built nativly under Win32, some use cygwin for posix emulation. I've never had a problem with either though |

we was running windows ircd(windows 2000 server) plus two of the server admin still running on windows xp and windows 2000,if you are whiling to run the computer just for ircd then you will be ok, downside is you have to watch out for windows updates ,other than that once its running leave it well alone and it will run up to 4 months with out looking at it,good firewall minum ports open you should be ok
we ran a whole network on windows (based at home).
it can be done, but have you got a spare computer to run 24/7? |

| If it's a network of sufficient size the machine should be dedicated to running an ircd regardless of its operating system. |

Basic Shells are about 3 bucks. Even small networks would be able to afford them. |

Erm. I'm sure if someone wanted to know software names they would have asked. Right? |
