I think its stupid that many people bash windows because its not "leet" enough to run an IRC server - what load of crap.
Windows has no problem running an IRC server - either is fine.
Having said that, the one I run (which only houses ~100 people at any one time) runs on a linux server simply because thats what we have available - either OS would be fine. |

I'm sorry, but Windows 9x, ME is not capable of running a stable IRC server for more than 20 connections. This is by design of Windows 9x Winsock.
Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server? That can probably run the living hell out of an IRCd, but when it comes down to it, using UNIX (such as FreeBSD)/UNIX-like systems (such as Linux), is probably a lot more cost effective when you take into consideration how much effort would be required to maintain a secure Windows installation on a production system. Not to mention that most Windows Update packages require a full system restart.
That said, I used to oper on a network that was WIRCD-only... they ran Windows 2003 and a heavily modified Unreal... The network had about 2000 users until it was shut down by it's owner because the services hub got hacked.
So yes, it *is* possible... just not very feasible to do it right.

I think it's safe to say that Windows 9x, ME just shouldn't be used full stop. :)
Completely agree with your other points though. I think the main problem when people argue that Windows shouldn't be used for an IRC server is that they argue completely wrong or irrelevant issues. |

I ran Unreal on windows XP long ago (when I was trying out ircds and all) and trust me, it sucked ass. Very low socket limit and it kept disconnecting every few days or so. Then switched to linux, a lot better
However, I heard that Windows 2000 isn't as bad. |

| Windows just is not stable enough, I dont care what version it is. It isn't a hardware issue, it's just an issue that windows sucks as far as use for public-performance software (like an ircd). You're better off using your favorite linux distro or buying a shell. |
