|
|
Lately i've been seeing quite a few small networks looking for links, and it's getting annoying always seeing "looking for links", so why don't they just get users first? They'll have a much higher chance of recruiting servers if they have more users. Anyways, just wanted other people's opinions. |

Quite agree, we are a new network, small at the moment but until we get more users links would be pointless, we would just end up with a network full of opers lol

A network needs to stand alone and look to nearly outgrow the system(s) it has before it adds more. Yogi is correct, no network needs to be top heavy with opers and servers. Build your user base first.

| I can't say much, SubIRC has only been open since Sept 3rd 2005, but ive got about a 70 user base, no warez or anything. ive had a few nets myself, which ive shut down due to boredom on IRC or lack of funding, im not shutting subirc down though, but erm, why don't people just stop making networks and linking to networks that already exist? |

I think the answer to that is that they haven't found an existing net that meets their needs.
I'm sure that most of us have been staff on other networks, that's where we learn. Learn both how to do stuff and how *not* to do stuff.
With windoze IRCD's and adsl/cable available there are now a lot more people liable to start IRC networks. Some will be for good reasons, some cos they are wannabe Net Admins
Good networks will attract users and grow, bad ones will wither and die.
But, hey, that's IRC

Who said it's the amount of users that counts?
A Network that starts out with very good policy and rules, etc. Admins will say "hmm, that's a good partner to work with" and he/she would link a server and work as a team to improve the network.

the reality of it is, users and network policy go hand in hand for success/failure....
having a strong, well worded policy will attract users, and thus network reputation (bringing with it more servers volunteering their services in spreading the userbase).
Adversly, having a poor or substandard policy (or one seldom enforced) would be detrimental to the reputation of one's network, and the staff which maintain it... scaring away the users you want, getting users you don't want, and at the same time losing servers that would be vital to the integrity of your work...
just my 2 cents |

This is completely wrong. In my experience, when IRC users join a network they don't even look at policies.
What tends to be far more influential is how the network staff treat the users once they've joined. Oh, and how many cool and pointless services are on offer to them too. :) |

Oh, and how many cool and pointless services are on offer to them too. | Well, it's the Network Staff who enforce a policy, so in a way, the userbase would be reading the policies by way of "leading by example". I agree with the cool and pointless services too, there are some networks that go mod crazy (seen one with almost every mod on the anope site and then some... was a tad crazy, I initially thought, but hey - it's unique!).
Either way you look at it, the users are getting to terms with the network policies by either reading the policies themselves, or by observing the netstaff (who should be the ones that enforce a network policy, and not act like they are above the rules) |

For the same reason you created your net .. and for the same reason every one of the thousands of other networks except for EFnet was created. |
