|
|
I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this:
I have a network of 2500 avg. users and im currently using bahamut-1.4.35 . I never used Unreal but i've heard is was good. One of the main reasons I want to switch is because of the hostmasking\vhost option with Unreal. Its pretty snazzy.
:?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
- Which uses more bandwidth?
- Which is most stable with redhat & freebsd?
- Which supports more users smoothly?
:?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
Thanks in advance! |

| I've heard reports of Unreal having problems with > 225 users, but I have never seen it happen. |

Do you mean 225 PER server or network total? Some of my popular servers have 500-700 users.
(Its been so long since I last heard your voice ed.. lol) |

Per instance of unreal.. but again - I cannot attest to this. Never seen it actually happen. (The only >255 user network I've run ran on Hybrid.)
Yep, been a long time since I've talked with you, also been a long time since that phone charges came in. |

 You've got to be kidding me? If I called someone in China for some information and they never knew I was calling, I woulnd't expect them to page anything. Theres no way in hell you could have charged me for that bill... lol |

| From my experience bahamut is an efficent no frills irc daemon with ample functionality. Unreal from my experience uses more memory and allows network staff using that daemon to infringe on it's users privacy more |

i used to have that opinion. but lately i've decided:
the more options and the more control, the better. if you have staff that likes to "infringe on privacy" then you should reconsider who is on staff. anything can be abused. the trick is not abusing it. unreal is great for what it allows, and some of the 'frills' are really nice. i love some of the channel and user modes it has that bahamut doesn't. |

I would just like to point out, that i connected to ICQ's IRC server, and found 5 servers, all running Unreal 3.1.x, with these network stats:
There are 69 users and 5210 invisible on 6 servers
6 operator(s) online
75 unknown connection(s)
1583 channels formed
I have 1078 clients and 2 servers
-
Current Local Users: 1078 Max: 1799
Current Global Users: 5279 Max: 11899
^ answer any questions about users-per-server?
I run Unreal3.2-beta18 on all servers I admin, and I wouldn't use any other IRCd, I love Unreal =P |

ICQ's IRC IRCD
--- Unreal3.1.5.1-Valek(IrCQnet). irc-m07.icq.aol.com :CFhIpROoKXSs [*=2302(H)]
--- MAP KNOCK SAFELIST HCN WATCH=128 SILENCE=5 MODES=12 MAXCHANNELS=10 MAXBANS=60 NICKLEN=15 TOPICLEN=120 KICKLEN=120 CHANTYPES=# PREFIX=(ohv)@%+ CHANMODES=ohvbeqa,kfL,l,psmntirRcOAQKVHGCuzN :are supported by this server
Your Unreal IRCD
--- Unreal3.2-beta18. irc.c-chat.com :FhiXOoZ [*=2303]
--- MAP KNOCK SAFELIST HCN MAXCHANNELS=10 MAXBANS=60 NICKLEN=30 TOPICLEN=307 KICKLEN=307 MAXTARGETS=20 AWAYLEN=307 :are supported by this server
--- WALLCHOPS WATCH=128 SILENCE=5 MODES=12 CHANTYPES=# PREFIX=(ohv)@%+ CHANMODES=beqa,kfL,l,psmntirRcOAQKVGCuzNSM NETWORK=C-Chat CASEMAPPING=ascii :are supported by this server
As you can see by the alteration of their Unreal IRCD daemon name they are not using stock Unreal software to run their network. |

| that's not the best argument, and you damn well know it. it's still unreal whether it's modified or not. they probably changed a few modes here and there but underneath it all, what they are running is unreal. |

| That may be true, but unless you can find out for me what the exact mods are and then re-create them and do a side to side comparison the fact they run it is as a modified daemon means quite a deal. No one will run their version of Unreal, and seeing AOL owns ICQ now i highly doubt anyone will ever. |

| Unreal may use a bit more memory, but Bahamut has the disadvantage that its coding team mysteriously disappeared last year, so anyone who dosen't like its many bugs, has to fix them himself. |

Supposedly the newer version of unreal has been tested to up to 500 local users per server without issues. (And I've heard of, though I haven't witnessed-local usercounts in excess of 1000 per server with no problems)
But, the current version does have a nasty habit of occasionally splitting between hubs when a leaf relinks-but its being worked on as we speak.
As for unreal's spymodes, any ethical network can simply disable that mode. I've had it disabled on my network ever since it existed since I didn't want the abuse and potential problems involved, and in the newer 3.2 versions it no longer exists.
I used to run the 3.1.x series but am now running 3.2, and with ziplinks (compressed data between servers) bandwith consumption isn't too bad at all. |
