I need help in picking a good reliable Ircd.
One that is simple to Configure.
And besides UnrealIrcd |

there is absolutely nothing wrong with unreal. i'd venture to say that for a reasonably small network it is ideal.
but if you are adament about not using unreal, go with bahamut. i liked it when i used it for a while. |

| Take a look at viagraircd-yes, tacky name-but I'm strongly considering converting to it from Unreal3.1.6, because it uses less bandwith, but has all the stuff Unreal has basically. |

Not really-alot of the networks were smaller networks that were using illegal copies. They have apparrantly tightened up security on it so its much harder to crack, so the only ones running it now are the people who can actually afford the licence fee |

UnrealIRCd? Fine?
Ouch.. Wouldn't touch it.. Easy to take down, too many un-needed 'features' etc..
A lot of networks use it because it is easy to set up.. Not because there are any benefits from using it (Other than the fact it could be set up in 10 mins by a 5yr old)
Hybrid/IRCu best imho ;) |

| how are alot of features not a benefit? are you too cool for them or something? one of those people who would rather use notepad than dreamweaver -- not for the feel of hand coding something but simply because hey who needs a fanciful GUI with tons of "unneccessary features" that makes your job easier? guess what? m gonna write for a living. maybe i should use vi or pico in lieu of microsoft word, because by god, its cool and not as mainstream? i'm trying to get a clear idea of what exactly your argument is. because in one sentence you say "lots of features" and "easy to set up" and then you turn around and say its useless. if its a stability thing i havent noticed a difference between unreal and hybrid. i've ran both and had similar uptimes/stability with both on smaller nets. |

Never had a stable copy of Unreal.. It couldnt handle 50 floodbots loaded onto any server..
The features don't make your job easier - as they are not needed anyway. |

I can't stand coding in Dreamweaver... I think it is much easier to write up a simple page in TextEdit (or Notepad for you Windows people). But thats just my opinion. |

i've had the misfortune of having a couple hundred flootbots up on my server, and that leads me to make two points:
1. some of those "useless features" were awesome for dealing with it.
2. the server itself had no problem withstanding the influx of traffic
as for the dreamweaver comment (getting off on a bit of a tangent): i've always used notepad, too, until recently. i still use it to tidy up code after i finish something in dreamweaver, but dreamweaver but its a wonderful editor. i can totally respect the folks who dont use it because they find it easier and more efficient to code by hand or whatever, but you know there are folks who dont like anything new because it isnt "leet" or cool or oldschool or impossible to learn or whatever else they feel sets them apart from the crowd. and thats silly. and thats the point i think i was trying to make a few posts back. |
