Specific kinds of channels, that do not have less then a certain amount of users. In other words, that have some good usage.

I like an ircd that gives me some control over myself. Hostmasking is generally appreciated.
Services, I don't really care what they are so long as they're reliable and they exist -- i prefer controlled environments.
Website - They are a good marketing tool, but most people don't take advantage of what you can do. It's really sad that more PHP people haven't considered what you can do when you get at it Wink.
User count - This isn't really a big factor for me, but I really prefer to have SOME users :p. 2 idlers don't count.
Staff - Friendly, accessible, talkative and above all, knowledgable staff are nice.

ditto that.
I am learning PHP (although still more comfortable with ASP) and covering new ground each time I hit php.net for some info

Plain and simple.

1. Stability, no splits every 30 minutes. Especially if there are 30 users and 10 servers.
2. Easy channel registration, I can't stand having to submit a small thesis and several personal references to use services in my channel.
3. Mature staff.
4. No warez.
5. I don't care if you Unreal/Anope, but do something special with it. They are both very customizable so there's no reason for the unreal/anope nets to be exactlly alike as far as features are concerned.
6. No power hungry staff that feel they need to use SuperAdimn and/or can't respect the fact that it may be your network .. but it's my channel.

I'm not too worried about website. There are billions of them, I'm on IRC to chat. I have mixed emotions about web interfaces to services. Yes, they are handy but IMO they take your users from IRC and I somehow feel that your services db's are now more vulnerable to intrusion.

So long as the users are friendly, the servers (and services) are stable and if needbe, the staff be open and welcoming and helpful if I have a problem or question, it meets my criterion.
I don't care what IRCd you're using. If you're using the latest beta of Unreal or an antique (like Raptor) or anything in the middle, it doesn't make a difference to me. As long as it doesn't hamper my chatting, I don't care.
As long as the services are simple and self explanitory, I don't care if you're using Anope or something you wrote yourself with sloppy coding.
I don't usually visit websites of irc servers. I'm looking at the list of servers I connect to at startup, I've never even been to some of their websites.
I do prefer servers without warez.

IRCd (I dont trust many daemons) same with services

user count isnt much importance to me but a dead network is a no no for me

and a good staff is always good, I dislike staff who abuse their power (specially if one is j/k and oper goes on a power trip about it)

Thanks alot for all your feedback... i am looking to start a new network.. but i want to make sure its right for the users.

Its all good if i set it up the way i want it, but there is no point doing that if no one else likes it.

If you wish to hear more about the network i am setting up or wish to give me some more sugestions, then post here or PM me and i promise to reply.

Thanks again guys means alot to get some feedback..

That's outstanding that you have taken the trouble to find what users want before proceeding, I commend you.

However, please do yourself the favor to also investigate as to whether an IRC network doesn't already exist that does what you are invisioning. Many times over there is a new network started and another network does the same thing already exists. This leads to having hundreds of like minded networks that all have only a hand full of users. Instead of 1 good quality network with several users.

Perhaps you can share your vision with us and someone may already have a net that meets your requirements. There is alot less "work" in linking to a network than creating one.

Well, being one to have ran a network for 3 years, and starting a new one.

These are my key aspects in an irc network

1) Friendly Professional Acting Stuff
2) Stable Server with fast speeds and high uptimes
3) A good channel count, i dont like xdcc networks very well
4) A good number of users to chat with
5) IRCops in different locations, so 1 is on at all times, or most, and can translate
6) A non power happy founder, admins

thats all i can really think of so far, the website bases doesnt really matter, unless your like me and not make irc the main part of the network

Good friendly staff who will help you when you need it and not laugh at a seemingly stupid question to them.

How many users doesn't really matter as long as the ones on there actually move and interact - nothing is worse than going to a network only to be in rooms of 40+ people who all idle all the time or 30 odd are bots.

The services doesn't really matter imo as long as 1. the help command is easy to figure out and 2. there are staff who can help you out if needed and are friendly.

As for the website - i'm nosy, I like to see who the staff are and see some stuff about the channels on there so I can pick which channels to join.

OH! AND NO DAMN AUTOJOIN CHANNELS! I hate when i connect to a server i get autojoined to a channel - makes me not use that server unless i absolutely have to!

Sounds like the network where I oper. If that is your goal, it is an admirable one and I wish you all the luck in the world.

A suggestion is to look for your IRCops among the older folks with no desires to do more than just what you are asking, help users. Many of these people trained on top networks (size and user wise) run by IRCnazi's and nut cases. They are well trained, know their stuff, love their jobs, but eventualy flee in mass from their admins. Often they find themselves banned from the network and wander around for a bit looking lost before leaving IRC all together.

There are plenty of them out there. Grab them as they wander in and out your door looking a bit dero.

Just a thought. Smile

Yes, my network has alot of standards, and age doesnt really matter, theres a 14 year old on my network that impressed all of us, very smart, and very mature, I made him a support helper cause i feel he can be professional but friendly at the same time Smile. He knows who he is Razz
