| ok so at my network we have had complains about our spamfilter blocking url's and anything containing irc. or somethingIRC.com/net/org to channels, who thinks spamfilters are lame and anything should go because spammers are lame? I'm thinking of just getting rid of it. |

| spamfilter is fine as long as your regex's are good....and ot also depends what you are trying to acheive by using 'em... |

your spamfilters arent worth jack if you dont know how to make "proper" regex...
see http://regular-expressions.info/
but in the end its still up to you to make "good" ones |

Spamfilters (in the case of URLS) would be a nightmare to set up for every TLD out there, in that sense, blocking the protocols (like irc://, http:// etc) would be better, but would bring nightmares of its own (like normal users posting their holiday snaps stored on photobucket [for example])
But, as zeke said, it all depends on how well you do regex (or regexp, as some type) and how much compromise you are willing to do in reagrds to spam filtering / posting of urls |

i didn't like the idea of blocking all spam to all channels, so set my own system up where all Private/Secret channels the spam filtering ignores. public channels can be set to allow no spam, only registered users can spam, or everyone can spam.
it took me a while to get the regex's setup, but they seem to be effective, with only one false positive in the last 6 months, although occasionally i have to modify them slightly for things they miss. |

oh the spamfilters were setup with the right regex and blocked what we meant to but some users complained about it because they could not send any links to channels only on notice and/or PM
so we decided to get rid of em and if someone abuses our no spam rule (spamming other networks) we will take care of it |
