There seems to be a fair few sIRC forum users who have nothing better to do than to trash a particular IRCd (UnrealIRCd seems to be popular in this regard)

Well, to you who just dump on IRCds -- there are a few solutions you may want to consider

1) Use another IRCd for your network server needs
2) Make your own
3) Dont have a network of your own at all

UnrealIRCd is one of the best IRCds you can get these days, and the ability to be as simple or complex as one wants gives the coders behind it like codemastr great credit. They (those who code IRCds) have willingly spent their free time making something for you users to use on your own networks for absolutely no direct cost to you. The least ya can do is appreciate the effort they have put into helping the IRC community as a whole.

again, the message is simple: If you don't like it, dont use it and dont criticise those who make it

OH ffs .. cummon! Its the most highly used IRCD in the irc world - its obvious that ppl are gona 'dis it , but this is due to sheer volume of use. IF people didnt like the ircd then they wouldnt run it and it wouldnt be the most used ircd.

That is true, Unreal is quite populair and its probably one of the best IRCd you can have unless you make your own custom ircd.

It is my opinion that the reason UnrealIRCd is so popular is becuase people enjoy using it, and making their own networks with it (and good on them)

The people who do piss me off, however, are those who dont even use UnrealIRCd (letalone have their own net) and diss it because they either dont know how to set it up properly (and more than likely backfired on them due to poor setup) or been on networks that unfortunately have Power Trippers on them and are run by UnrealIRCd (so they get the perception that UnrealIRCd is a PT's tool -- which is totally false, you can be a PT on almost any IRCd conceivable, if not any IRCd that supports IRC Operators).
And it is to those people who I am my statement at: If you are just going to moan about a given IRCd, use someone elses or make yer own -- and keep ya trap shut, but that doesn't mean that people can't comment on (say) a bug in an IRCd that they may hold concern about, and thats fair enuff. But constantly slamming it is not an easy way to get popular amongst IRCers -- in my opinion.

Good point! Yeah that might be true that people diss it cause they use other ircds, such as Bahamut or Ultimate. But personally whether I like a ircd or not I don't diss it, I like Unreal , I also like Bahamut & even Ultimate but I use Unreal right now and is happy with it.

Case in point: how many threads on this forum have been locked/deleted because those threads were nothing but IRCd slamming?

Its just pathetic really

very good post PingBad.

I followed one of the 3 options and made my own ircd. I did this for the main reason that the unrealircd developers have their own agendas, and their own goals for their project. I can no more force them to add features that i want, than they could force me to add features to my own projects. For this reason i decided to write my own software, which i am currently still working on (it is more work than you'd think!).

In this case, i didnt branch unreal but started from scratch, due to my goals being very very different from those of codemastr et al, but the beauty of opensource is if you want to branch an existing project you can, and all the features you complain about in 'ircd brand X' you can fix and make your own 'ircd brand X with extra sprinkles' if you like.

Just my 0.02 worth.

Good luck to ya, bro

I once tried making an IRCd under Visual Basic (since this is the only programming language I have a strong enough grasp on to get the task done). I wasn't even a qaurter of the way thru RFC 1459 (which is good starting reference as to how an IRCd should run) when the task became too much for me to carry on.
But I wish you luck nonetheless.

Yeah. you can code an ircd in just about any language, ive seen them written in C, perl, php... even things like smalltalk and other such educational languages. The thing isnt what you code it in as some people may believe, but how knowledgeable you are in your specific language.

With me the problem hasn't been RFC compliance but the issues are actually performance and compatibility with other pieces of software (e.g. ircservices, anope, defender etc). Once it supports all of these pieces of software and the remaining performance glitches are ironed out i may go beta with it.
