Asking a broad question like that is a bad idea.. And i'm sure you're going to get lots of replies telling you not to bother.. But i say, if you want to start your own irc server this is what you need:
Your own at home:
Internet
Computer
Linux(but Windows can be used)
UnrealIRCd (or any other IRCd)
.. and some good ol' RTFMing
Located elsewhere:
A shell with ircd allowed: www.vitalspeeds.com
a SSH client
a FTP client (handy)
UnrealIRCd (or any other IRCd)
... and some good old RTFMing
I know this has proberbly not helped you atall but if you don't understand that, you have no chance. |

| My advice to you is not to try if you are asking a question like that. Starting a IRC server and finding a good provider is hard work. I recommend you join an existing network. If you really want to start your own IRC server, then I suggest you use google, it is your best friend. Try the following terms: "ircd" and "irc services". Good luck with your decision. |

| Before you actually decide to go ahead with starting your own network/server learn more about irc. I by no means say "DON'T" but learn more about IRC before you have a go. It's not hard but walk before you can run. |

| Good advice. I think we were all at once that n00bish, but my advice is the same as [DiMENSiON]'s. Get to know your way around mIRC or IRC first... if you have friends that run servers ask them to give you an o:line so you can learn the operator commands, or you will have one hell of a time trying to understand all of it. Study the different services, and irc daemons. |

running an IRCd server is not an easy task you learn from night to day, get some books or google search some tutorials about *nix, IRC and a bit about networkin, and learn what to do before you do it.
not saying dont go for it, but in order to run something right you must first aquire the knowledge about it. |

| Not really.. running an IRCd is not rocket science.. takes a bit of know how, nothing much else. "v3|0c17y" , you make it sound like people who run their own networks or servers are the 31337 m4st0rz of t3h un1v3rs3.. which we are not. |

Could this be any weirder? It takes very basic intelligence to setup an ircd on any operating system. Linux.Unix, Windows anything.. The commands for running it on the other hand, are a little more tricky. You catch on to those quik also.. after you've done them enough, you'll forget you never knew them If you need more help, feel free to email me at kg6ncl@yahoo.com and I will teach you the basics, with unreal or whatever irc daemon you plan to use. I have a test server you can mess with, wont hurt anything.. please send me an email. Thanks |

basically, yes, dimension is right. learn about IRC, how it works 'behind the scenes' so to speak. if you're thinking you'd be more likely to want to host a server elsewhere ( i'd advise it over home hosted) run a server at home first, as a 'testnet' to give you a chance to familiarise yourself with the ircd and services package which you choose to run, spend some time on that, learning things that way, have your friends come on that as well, because if you can do that, you're learning how to help users, how to deal with queries and complaints, how to meet their requests ( vhosts, etc ), and doing that will lead you through things quicker. Also, running a testnet and having your friends come on it, also means that by the time you feel ready to start having a server hosted elsewhere, getting a domain for it etc, you've already got some degree of userbase, which is something you need to consider as well, as many of the networks that start with 0 users, quickly die off, and if you're looking to start it you're obviously hoping it'll keep going, so users are a consideration too. i'd concur again with dimension suggesting Unrealircd, it's quite easy to get up and running to start with, although you probably won't be using everything it's capable of, at the begginning, but you'll be able to get it up, services wise, again, Anope are easy to configure to a basic level, which is all you'd be looking for to begin with, so those would be good starting choices, even if you don't stick with them. Best of luck with your venture, and if you do go ahead with it, let us know, i'd be happy to explain any questions you have that i know the answers to, as i'm sure there's others on here who'd be just as happy to help.
once again, good luck dude. |

i was just giving simple advice to the n00b, u dont do something without knowing first, then it turns out into crap, maybe the kid hasnt ever been on a *nix based system? or seen an IRCd .conf file or anything at all?
just saying if you want to do something right, know what you are doing first |

if your looking to use it one windows or linux i suggest unreal its about the best especialy for newcomers.
you dont need to "research" irc if you dont want to. i myself learned it BY doing it first hand over 2 years ago. geting down and dirty with the conf and testing out settings and what not. |

Not really you don't have to be a rocket scientist or so. Source codes for different ircd's are already given on the web, unreal, bahamut, ultimate, just choose one, download it onto your box, do a simple configure procedure then compile it, as you do for eggdrops, and psybnc's. That's all!
Then you just need to edit the ircd.conf file. Bind to a specific ip on your box. Try resolving your domain's dns also. When you get better you can maybe go around and play with config.h and maybe the source code too if you are good in C. |

| It can be hard to set up a server if you are a newbie, but there is help files on the net, so you should basically choose an IRCd that suits your needs, like Bahamut, Unreal , Ultimate or others. |

a irc. is just a subdomain. You buy a domain and set irc. as a subdomain that's pretty much. It can also be set as a CNAME in your domains DNS control but you do need a shell setup for this to actually work, you can't setup the subdomain or CNAME and expect it to magically create a irc server. |
