|
|
I just had a link application denied at a network because I offended someone by asking them their a/s/l.
I personally cannot see how that is offensive.
Take this MSN conversation I just had about it:
| Quote: |
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
...
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
yea people get offended by a/s/l
me says:
are u being sarcastic or serious? lol
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
serious
me says:
wtfffffff
me says:
uve had people get offended when u asked them a/s/l?
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
yea
me says:
how?!
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
I don't generally answer
me says:
omg you're just as weird as them
me says:
lol
me says:
i really dont understand how someone can get offended when u ask them who they are
me says:
*sighs
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
a/s/l isn't who you are.
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
it's like asking
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
HEY WANNA CYBER?
I was gonna call 911.... But I was downloading a file. says:
i just want to know if you're female and you're between 18 - 30
me says:
no its not!
me says:
its asking "are u a male or female, how old are u, and where do u reside?"
me says:
thats not asking "hey are u old enough to touch yourself?" |
I personally like to know who I am talking to. The circumstances that surround this is I was having a fun conversation with a couple of people in this networks main channel, and I asked "btw [nickname], a/s/l?" And this person apparently got very offended by it.
I have no idea how. It was not an "hey you wanna cyber? a/s/l", nor was I talking rudely when I asked it.
Can someone please explain to me how that is offensive? I have NEVER had someone get offended by that question before, and I have been on IRC since I was 12. And it is not like I asked this person straight off. We had been talking for a good while.
This comes as a shock to me. |

personally i find somone asking for my "a/s/l" not only annoying but rude. Would you walk up to a random person yuo didnt know ask ask them how old they are? I would hope not. I usually avoid people who start off their conversation with "a/s/l".
All things aside tho... are you sure you want to get involved with a network whome would deny your donation to them solely on the fact you asked them this? I personally would not thing twice about the network your referring to if it happened to me. |

heh im not thinking twice about them, im now looking for another network to link up to.
im tryin to find a decent sized network (decent means ~200+ users) that dont allow warez that want to link my dedicated box up. not having much luck :/
back on topic tho, IRC is not r/l, and you normally know what sex someone is, around how old they are, and where they live when you are talking to them face to face anyways! also, the conversation was not by any means started off with "a/s/l" |

a/s/l have nothing to do with most of the channels (mostly help channels) I hang out in. however there are a few that in order to maintain the "atmosphere" your age is requested (25+ only) and your sex (gender) is requested because the females are voiced.
All other a/s/l/ requests I simply ignore but don't find them rude. On another note I also don't find PM's without permission rude, again I simply ignore the ones I don't want. |

like it was said above ' why get involved with a network who denies you because of this . I think that age sex and location IS vital when linking (as for my network we only accept 18+ age links and 18+ age opers) but there are other ways to find out other than asking for ASL. you can usually find this information by talking to them more - which tbf is needed!. ASL connotes lazyness!! which is never a good thing if you are wanting to link, it is also a commonly used phrase amoung 14 - 16 year old chatters on the old school msn chat room.. Stay away from this phrase at all possible costs!

I don't think asking someone their a/s/l is lazy at all. if anything it helps to promote the conversation and move it along.

Excactly it is rude, you chat and the rest comes later.
Question:A/S/L
Answer:What ?
Question:age/sex/location
Answer:404 Error- click your on ignore.
Then, wonder why they left.
Asking other users for this information, whether in a private message or in the main chat area, is considered extremenly rude.
What I usually do with them that are rude, is give them my website addy where they can see my pics and find out what they need too. then I put them on ignore, from past experiences these a/s/l merchants are waste of time. Its not worth your time in chatting to them.
Logging off without saying goodbye is another one of the most annoying occurrences in the irc chat community especially them that come and you never seen them again.

| To play devil's advocate, asking ASL is asking for basic information you could tell about a person pretty much by looking at them in 'real life'. |

In some cases it is basically like Hey wanna cyber...I know this from experience. In those cases I do find it rude. If the person who asks, and we are on ok terms i don't mind them knowing my age. Depending on the person if they pick up on things they can tell what gender i am. They only have to watch. mannerisms etc. and if i'm comfortable sharing any info on me i'll say it but other then that i just wanna chat and if it comes up it comes up . don't want to be pressured into saying info.

Thats what I considered it as.
I never asked the question straight up, we had been chatting for about an hour and a half in the main room about different stuff. and i was like "oh btw, a/s/l?" cause i had already told them my age, and now that i thikn about it this person had already asked me where i lived, but they had never said anything about themselves. |

| I get offended by it too. I don't know you one bit. Why do I want to tell you my age, sex, and location? Are you intending to stalk me? |
