Jason fails to include the nearly $500 per month it costs to run SearchIRC that he pays out of his own pocket, or the 8+ months he has spent coding the search engine and website. He works a full time job, then goes home and works until 2 or 3 am on SearchIRC
Like the IRC ops and volunteers that help run IRC networks, no one associated with SearchIRC gets paid for anything. If any money does come in (ie, the few dollars per day currently coming in from adsense), it goes to offset the bills and provide additional resources for users. |

Well.. you could make a "Donation to SearchIRC" thing.
Did you know that even though mIRC is not forcing you to buy itself and the program can be legally downloaded and used free from their web-site, over 100 people buy it every months and not long ago the owner of mIRC donated a huge amount of money from mIRC sales (10 million i think) to the charity =)
This wouldn't force people to pay for SearchIRC Services but one of the "333 users online" would surely donate some money =]
Once again, it's just a suggestion =P |

iigor, mIRC was indeed generous with their donation to the Red Cross. I believe it was a month's sales, totaling $24,000. Not shabby at all. :)
We'll figure out some creative ways to help SearchIRC. Meanwhile, thanks for clicking on the advertisers who support us! |

I use the adsense thing on my website also for my network. All of the funding goes to fund things that most people don't think about-website hosting, dns hosting, domain name payments.
These are all extra costs that I, as the network founder, have to absorb in addition to other little things that come up, and the shell accounts I pay for.
Bandwith isn't cheap, so any way money can be made on the side helps. I would never charge for people to use my IRC network-that is totally against what IRC is.
The adsense HELPS to pay for it, the rest is made up by myself usually. Thats the way it has to be |

OUCH.
Thats some major bandwith. Whats the major consumer? The site itself or the bots extracting the information?
I've got leafs that are lucky to use 5GB a month |

probably both since the /whois records are held for some time.
That means, if you search for "nick" 10 times in 10 minutes, the bot only /whois'es once.
However once the bots are on many networks, u can really say OUCH. |

Do you know what it's like to see something that you've put your heart and soul into creating grow and flourish and become one of those communities? What it feels like to give back to someone, someone just discovering the Internet, those same feelings of wonder and awe and warmth and community and friendship that you found? To receive, not the welcome random bit of thanks here and there, but the far deeper and more wonderful knowledge that you've built and maintained something that people are using and using to do things and see things and think things that they otherwise would never be able to do or would have no outlet for?

IRC will continue to thrive and grow and develop and change while ever there are people like him and you and me and us

Aslong as there is IRC, wether it be underground or as public as it can get, i will always run my own network (wether it be big or small) i will always sit in a channel in away mode not accepting PMs and never remain silence just cause i can. mIRC takes what a whole 1% of my processor and the shell takes next to nothing...
Just like old games like Soldier of Fortune 2, people will keep playing and chatting it aint going no where in my opinion |
